Journey is a wordless story told through gameplay and visual-only cutscenes. The player's character begins near a small sand dune in a vast desert. Walking to the top of the dune, the character can see looming in the far distance a large mysterious mountain with a glowing crevice that splits its peak.

Alone and surrounded by miles of burning, sprawling desert, you soon discover the looming mountaintop is your goal. The passage will not be easy but this experience of a lifetime will help you discover who you are, what this place is, as you arrive at your purpose.
The Traveler is the main protagonist and player character of Journey. The Traveler is genderless and its name, age and story are unknown. The Traveler is a Rythulian, much the same as the cloaked figures and companions found in numerous cutscenes.
The cloth homies comprise several species that resemble creatures from Earth, including dolphins, flying carpets, schools of fish, jellyfish, and sharks, whales, and can be found in many of the levels in Journey.
In The Tunnels and The Mountain areas the player encounters flying monsters known as Guardians. They are mechanical in nature and will attack the Traveler if the player is caught in their spotlight.
Are glowing segmented worm-like creatures that can be found in the Tower level. It's an Easter egg referring to the game Flow (flow), the first commercially released title from That Game Company.
Companion is the term for a Wayfarer that travels with you. They are possibly the most important part of Journey.
